By Dax Riner
Their Lives, Our Voices, CAA's summer conference, got a great reaction online, raising the profile of animal advocacy in the Midwest. From Factory Farm to Fork
by Beth Martin
On Wednesday, April 9th, 2008, a group of about 180 people gathered to listen to a presentation given by Gowri Koneswaran, Esq., Director of Animal Agricultural Impacts at the Humane Society of the United States. Animal advocates and environmentalists alike came to listen to her discuss the environmental impacts of the factory farming industry. While people filtered in, they were greeted with warm smiles and information on vegetarianism by cheerful CAA volunteers. They were also offered a variety of animal and environmental welfare leaflets, magazines, posters, and stickers to browse and take home.
Why We Advocate for Animals
by Kristina Darnell and Unny Nambudiripad
War, hunger, isolation, environmental degradation, and overpopulation; issues we all care about. So why does Compassionate Action for Animals, with all of the pressing issues that humans are facing, use our limited time and energy to focus on animals in particular?
CAA Celebrates Ten Years of Animal Advocacy
by Unny Nambudiripad
On April 4, 2008, 85 supporters attended CAA's annual banquet to toast our successes. Attendees bid on a silent auction, including such highlights as paintings of animals by Marly Cornell. We enjoyed a delicious meal, learned about the great variety and depth of work undertaken by CAA, and met with like-minded animal advocates.
Backroom Deli Deserves Front-row Attention
by Sarah Mobry
Rochester's Backroom Deli, as described by an employee, is
"Ninety-nine percent organic, 100% vegan, and 100% deli-licious."
Visitors to this eatery will find exactly that and more.
Kale and Cauliflower Soup
By Aimee Cardwell
This is a beautiful soup in taste and appearance with its contrasting kale and cauliflower. The rosemary gives it a great aroma.
The Price of Eggs
by Marion Robison
Growing up with chickens, and having spent many hours in the chicken house, I know for a fact that they are highly social animals; the rooster leading the flock, the hens extremely protective of their fertilized eggs and chicks. They have likes and dislikes. Just like other animals, they can be temperamental, bossy, easy going, laid back. Their favorite past times are sun bathing and hunting for seeds.

by Matt Mackall

Upcoming Events
by Abby Morrisette
Here at CAA, the fall season is already teaming with great events! The first major event of the season is our 5th Annual Vegan Food Showcase, which is on September 18. If you're not familiar with the event, then you are in for a treat! CAA gets food donations and discounts from dozens of different retailers and manufacturers and hosts a massive, all-day food giveaway on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus to vegetarian food.
