From Factory Farm to Fork
by Beth Martin
On Wednesday, April 9th,
2008, a group of about 180 people gathered to listen to a presentation
given by Gowri Koneswaran, Esq., Director of Animal Agricultural
Impacts at the Humane Society of the United States. Animal advocates
and environmentalists alike came to listen to her discuss the
environmental impacts of the factory farming industry. While people
filtered in, they were greeted with warm smiles and information on
vegetarianism by cheerful CAA volunteers. They were also offered a
variety of animal and environmental welfare leaflets, magazines,
posters, and stickers to browse and take home.
Factory farming affects the environment in numerous ways, but Gowri Koneswaran emphasized that the industry is the number one contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. She described the amounts of CO2, methane, and other gases released at each stage of "meat production". Even though she didn't discuss animal rights issues at length, it was clear that animals on factory farms live in terrible conditions. The link between animal exploitation and environmental health is a strong one, and it has become clear that the reasons to reduce meat consumption are numerous.
After an engaging question and answer session, the audience members made their way back to the lobby to socialize and eat vegan pizza from Galactic Pizza,. Some of the attendees were pleasantly surprised at how delicious it tasted. Walking through the crowd, one could hear much discussion about animal cruelty, environmental well-being, and vegetarianism. The event was eye-opening and inspiring; in summary, a huge success. After all, it inspired me, an environmental policy student and vegan, to become an active member of CAA.
