5th Annual Veg Week: A Triumphant Success!

In 2008, from September 30 to October 6, CAA's 5th annual Veg Week touched nearly 2,000 people through events such as a vegan food-giveaway, a lecture on the ethics of food, cooking classes, and dine-outs. This year 780 people pledged to go either vegetarian or vegan for the entire week, making this the most successful Veg Week ever. This total represents nearly 200 more people pledging than last year!

Jim Mason's The Ethics of What We Eat

On Tuesday, September 30th, 2008, over 400 people attended Veg Week's kick-off presentation "The Ethics of What We Eat - Why Our Food Choices Matter" by Jim Mason. Mason is an attorney, author, and lecturer, who is concerned with human, animal, and environmental issues. Mark Berkson, a professor of religion at Hamline University, introduced Mason to the audience, calling him a tirelessly passionate hero for animal rights. Berkson believes that the tipping point will be reached when people become more informed, think about the ethical dilemma of animal agriculture, and open their hearts to the plight of factory-farmed animals.

Outreach for Animals Week: A Volunteer-Driven Success

From October 12-19, 2008, CAA organized a week-long event called Outreach for Animals Week. Through the work of CAA's wonderful volunteers, this event accomplished its two main goals: to raise funds in support of the efforts of Compassionate Action for Animals; and to leaflet and thereby spread the word about the cruelties of factory farming.

A Joint Thanksgiving Celebration by EarthSave and CAA!

The Turkey Free Thanksgiving Potluck took place on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Matthew's Community Park. It was CAA's sixth annual potluck and, for the first time, was jointly hosted with EarthSave, a local vegetarian advocacy organization.

Bali Restaurant is the latest trendy arrival to an area of Nicollet Avenue that is thankfully undergoing a revitalization. This is great because it's a connecting area between downtown and uptown and a neighborhood sorely in need of more vegan-friendly restaurants.

Featured Volunteer: Suzanne Sorensen - Dietitian and CAA Board Member

Suzanne Sorenson became passionate about animal activism after an eye-opening scuba-diving experience. Witnessing the great multitude of sea life awakened her sense of interest in protecting creatures from the whims of humans. Although Suzy works full-time as a registered dietitian and diabetes educator, she spends much of her spare time advocating for animals.

Veg Out: The U of M's Veg-Friendly Dinner

On November 25 the University of Minnesota residential cafeterias hosted Veg Out, a vegetarian themed dinner. All six dorms participated, featuring unique vegetarian and vegan dishes, displaying vegetarianism- and CAA- related information, and allowing volunteers to set up literature tables. The Veg Out capped weeks' worth of collaborative efforts between myself and University Dining Services (UDS).
