Summer Volunteer Opportunities
Interested in helping the animals and having fun this summer? So are we! The animals in factory farms don't get a vacation over the summer, which is exactly why we must continue to advocate on their behalf.
CAA offers many great volunteer opportunities to help animals and promote vegetarianism, including:
- Organizing a film showing
- Planning a veg potluck picnic
- Participating in our vegan food giveaways
- Distributing or stocking educational leaflets
- Writing for our summer 2007 print newsletter
- Designing outreach materials
Check out a full listing of our current summer volunteer opportunities.
However you're able to help, you're bound to find something that matches your interests and skills! Even if you only have a few spare hours to help out, let us know by filling out a volunteer form online, emailing us at volunteer@ExploreVeg.org, or calling our office at 612-626-5785.
You can make a huge difference in the lives of thousands of animals!
Update on Section 123: Good News!
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture released its latest mark-up of the 2007 Farm Bill, which included 1) the removal of a little-known but far-reaching provision that had threatened to nullify dozens of animal welfare and food safety laws enacted through democratic decision-making at the state and local level, and 2) the removal of a $12 million subsidy for the veal industry. If passed, Section 123 could have stricken numerous state and local laws - ranging from prohibitions of horse slaughter to bans on the cruel treatment of farm animals.
Thanks to all the CAA supporters who contacted their representatives to express their concerns about this proposed provision!

Animals find residency at Farm Sanctuary
By Kim Severson as printed in the New York Times
July 7, 2007
The newest New Yorker to arrive is Lucky Lady, a lamb who was found tearing through the Bronx on June 13. Seeing her agricultural tags, the people who saved Lucky Lady concluded that she had escaped from a live animal market where the culinary and cultural value of certain kinds of meat comes from the timeliness and manner of slaughter.
...She will join 750 other animals that at one time or another were destined to become dinner. That includes dozens of chickens that survived Hurricane Katrina, a couple of ducks whose livers were going to become pâté de foie gras and 40 pigs, some of which were headed for the slaughterhouse when they were abandoned by a truck driver near Washington.
