Volunteer Opportunity: Get Animals on TV
Reach thousands of local television viewers with the message of compassion by helping CAA air videos on cable! Getting educational videos played on community cable channels is a great way to spread awareness about animal cruelty - at no cost and with very little time commitment.
Although CAA has been airing VegVideo and Undercover TV in various localities for several years now, we need your help to bring these shows to thousands more in the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area. The videos have segments ranging from vegan cooking classes and undercover investigations to interviews and documentaries.
If you live in a city (or suburb) in Minnesota and would like to get involved, please contact Lokita Henn at loki@exploreveg.org to get started. It's as easy as submitting the video to your community station just once a month—we'll even mail you the videos to submit.
January 2008 Book Club
Our next book in CAA’s Book Club is Compassionate Living for Healing, Wholeness, and Harmony by Joanne Stepaniak. The book received a four-star rating from readers and is described as a guidebook for enhancing our inherently compassionate nature. The author leads us through steps that extend our circle of compassion through our positive ideas and through self-examination. This book is available at Amazon.com, and Hennepin and Ramsey county libraries. It is an older title, so you might have luck at your local used book store too!
Anyone is welcome to attend the book-club meeting, wherever you are in the book or if you just want to join in the conversation. If you would like to join CAA's book club or have questions, please contact Suzy at suzy@exploreveg.org.

Press Release: Morningstar Farms Responds to Demand for Egg-Free Foods
Morningstar Farms, a Kellogg subsidiary that has been making vegetarian products for more than 25 years, has stated that it will use one million fewer eggs in 2008 while also offering more egg-free products.
According to company spokeswoman Kathleen Eckler, in 2008 "Kellogg is reducing the amount of eggs we use in our Morningstar products by a minimum of one million eggs. We are committed to announcing even more new vegan products for our customers."
After months of discussion on the topic with the Michigan-based company, Compassion Over Killing (COK) and Vegan Outreach, two nonprofit animal protection organizations, wholeheartedly applaud Morningstar Farms for implementing this policy. By reducing Kellogg's egg usage by more than a million eggs per year, nearly 4,000 fewer laying hens will suffer in factory farms each year.
Article: North Carolina Authorities Investigate Alleged Pig Abuse by Supplier for Largest U.S. Pork Producer

December 12, 2007
A local prosecutor in North Carolina is investigating allegations of animal cruelty by a pig farm supplying Smithfield Foods, the nation’s largest pork producer. The investigation comes after an animal rights activist secretly videotaped workers beating and dragging swine, gouging out their eyes and cutting out their testicles.
Attorneys from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals presented their case to the Sampson County District Attorney's Office in North Carolina on Monday and will turn over videotapes and a signed affidavit by PETA's undercover investigator, who says he witnessed daily violent mistreatment of baby and adult pigs at Murphy Family Ventures Garland Sow Farm in Garland, NC.
