Presentation: "From Farm to Fork: The Environmental Impacts of Animal Agriculture" (TOMORROW)

Did you know that animal farming is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than transportation?

Please join us for a multimedia presentation by Gowri Koneswaran, Esq., Director of Animal Agricultural Impacts at the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). She will reveal the true impact of factory farming on the environment, our rural communities, and on the farmed animals themselves. In this eye-opening exploration, Gowri will share positive, practical ways that regular people can make a difference for our planet and its inhabitants.

This is a free event, open to the public. It will be followed by a free reception featuring vegan pizzas from Galactic Pizza and a chance to interact one-on-one with Gowri.

Time: Wednesday, April 9, at 7 p.m.
Location: Bell Museum of Natural History, Auditorium, Minneapolis

Sponsored by: Compassionate Action for Animals, Minnesota Public Interest and Research Group (MPIRG), EcoWatch, and the Humane Society of the United States

Funding generously provided by: The Institute on the Environment, Graduate and Professional Student Assembly's Academic Grant, and the Student Activities Office Partnership Grant

Article: Potlucks Supply Moral Support for Local Vegetarians

By Erin Middlewood, as published in The Columbian
March 18, 2008

Lisa Morgan joked that fliers for Northwest Veg's new monthly Vancouver potluck should say, "So you thought you were the only vegetarian in Clark County ..."

That's how the Ridgefield resident felt when she first gave up eating meat four years ago. Then, about a year-and-a-half ago, she gave up all animal products to adopt a vegan diet after taking Portland-based Northwest Veg's Master Vegetarian classes.

"People kind of laugh at my green lunches," said Morgan, a third-grade teacher.

To get social support for her vegan lifestyle, she drove to potluck events across the Columbia River. But she really wanted to meet vegetarians closer to home. So she persuaded Northwest Veg, which has about 360 members in the metro area, to start hosting monthly potlucks in Vancouver. About 60 people attended the first one in January.

"Now I have a lot of new vegetarian friends," Morgan said, gesturing to the people noshing on such dishes as stuffed mushrooms, lasagna and chocolate cake at February's potluck.
