Veg Week 2008 Welcome!

In our fifth year, we would like to invite you to our biggest Veg Week yet! This year we will have an event every day of the week and a special card for pledgers that will provide discounts at many local restaurants and businesses. Please review all the events below, mark your calendars, and alert your friends and family. Come to one event or all!

Veg Week Kick-Off: "The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter" with Jim Mason

How much do we really know about the food we eat? Do we know how its production affects our planet?

Most of us go grocery shopping unaware of the often unclean, unethical, and destructive food production practices that lurk behind the snazzy packaging on the foods we buy. Yet there are ways to make better, more ethical food choices, and Jim Mason's presentation aims to show us how.

Beginning at the dinner tables of three American families, Mason takes us on an illuminating and humorous journey to uncover the origins of the food we eat, digging up secrets that food producers would rather keep buried. His investigative journalism uncovers the issues associated with buying local, organic, vegan, and fair trade, with attention to the complex dynamics of sustainability.

Jim Mason, Esq., is a writer and attorney who focuses on human and animal concerns. He is the author of several books, including the groundbreaking 1980 Animal Factories and the more recent The Ethics of What We Eat, both co-authored with renowned ethicist Peter Singer. Read more about Mason and the event.

This is a free event, and is open to the public. It will be followed by a catered reception featuring Pizza Luce pizza and a chance to interact one-on-one with Mason. Invite your friends, fellow students, co-workers, and family to this special event!

Time: Tuesday, September 30, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Coffman Union Theater, 300 Washington Ave. SE, Minneapolis

Sponsored by: Compassionate Action for Animals, Minnesota Environmental Studies Club, and the University of Minnesota Bookstore

While some food will be provided, everyone is encouraged to bring a vegan dish (no animal products) to share that serves around five to eight people. Also, it is encouraged, but not necessary, to bring your own plate and silverware. This is a great opportunity to sample dozens of delicious foods, meet cool people from the community, and have fun.

Friday: Film Screening of The Emotional World of Farm Animals

As part of Veg Week, we will be showing the delightful documentary The Emotional World of Farm Animals, followed by free snacks and a question and answer session.

In the documentary, narrator Jefferey Masson, leads viewers through the personal journey he underwent while writing for a forthcoming book. This journey into the sentient, emotional lives of farm animals brings Masson to animal sanctuaries around the country where caregivers and the animals themselves tell their harrowing stories of rescue and escape. Masson delves into the rich ancestry of these curious and intelligent animals and interviews top experts in animal behavior who offer scientific perspectives on these amazing creatures.
