More Exciting News on Recent Egg Farm Investigation

More on the latest investigation by Mercy for Animals: "...In an unprecedented action, which has never been seen by the animal protection movement, officials with the state police and Maine Department of Agriculture executed a court ordered search warrant, raiding Quality Egg of New England in Turner, Maine last Wednesday seeking additional evidence of animal cruelty. For eight hours, officials removed hens from the facility and documented evidence of mistreatment....

Yesterday, Eggland's Best announced it would immediately terminate its supplier relationship with the facility. Radlo Foods, the distributor of eggs from the factory farm targeted by MFA's investigation, has also terminated its relationship - meaning that eggs from the abusive facility will no longer appear on the shelves of Walmart, Stop & Shop, Hannaford, or Shaw's.

Further, Radlo Foods announced yesterday that it would become the first national egg producer to commit to ending its confinement of hens in cruel battery cages following the public release of MFA's undercover findings. Although the move away from battery cages will not prevent all cruelty, Radlo's decision will reduce the misery of millions of hens and may be the largest corporate policy change ever implemented as the result of an animal cruelty investigation...

Over a six-week period earlier this year, MFA's investigator documented egregious animal cruelty at the egg factory farm, including four to six hens crammed into tiny file-drawer sized cages, birds suffering untreated broken bones and infections, dead hens left to rot in cages with birds still producing eggs for human consumption, and farm workers kicking, breaking the necks of, and throwing live hens into trash cans.

Unfortunately, the abuse documented at Quality Egg of New England is not isolated. Numerous recent undercover investigations at egg facilities from coast to coast have documented similar abuses - illustrating that animal suffering is the industry norm, not the exception."
