Christian Reflections on Animal Welfare Event: Tomorrow!
What does the Bible say about animal welfare? What are our obligations towards animals? Does Christianity condemn animal cruelty?
Join Compassionate Action for Animals for a thought-provoking evening filled with film, discussion, and food. The brand new short film produced by the Humane Society of the United States, Eating Mercifully, will be screened for the first time in Minnesota at this event. This inspirational film uncovers the origins of modern food production and explores varying perspectives from Christians of all walks. Following the film, we will hear from distinguished guest panelists Pastor Greg Boyd and Dr. Mark Berkson as they address questions from the audience. The event will conclude with a reception during which attendees will be able to enjoy animal-friendly refreshments and interact with our panelists and each other.

2008 Annual Review
Celebrating a tenth anniversary in 2008, Compassionate Action for Animals made measurable progress in bringing about change for farmed animals during the past year. Focusing our attention on outreach in the Twin Cities, we sought to build a larger community of informed and compassionate consumers. The successes of the past year give us reason for optimism about our future efforts.
Check out our 2008 Annual Review.
After a decade of committed advocacy, CAA is ready to extend these efforts into the future. The strides we make toward a more compassionate world for all are possible only with the efforts and support of our generous volunteers and donors. By making a contribution, in whatever form, you give these animals a voice that must be respected.
Help us make 2009 even better. Make a tax-deductible contribution to support our crucial work.

Book Review: Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry
By Jessica Olson
While not vegan himself, author and "eco chef" Bryant Terry wanted to create a cookbook that dispelled the idea that African American and Southern cuisine means "meals organized around fatty meats with overcooked vegetables and fruits playing a minor supporting role" (Vegan Soul Kitchen, Introduction). To do this, Terry wrote Vegan Soul Kitchen, which focuses on fresh, sustainable, and animal product-free foods, and he injects his own personal style into each recipe - even suggesting songs to listen to while preparing each dish.
This book has so many delicious-looking recipes that it's hard to decide where to begin. How about a Double Watermelon-Strawberry Slushee on one of those hot summer days that we'll (hopefully) be seeing soon? Maybe dinner tonight will be Black Eyed Pea Fritters with Hot Pepper Sauce and Carrot-Cayenne Coleslaw. Hosting company? Perhaps the Smothered Seitan Medallions in Mixed-Mushroom Gravy is the perfect thing to impress even the most confirmed meat-eater.
With so many vegan cookbooks hitting the shelves these days, it's great to see one that focuses on creating cruelty-free soul food, which is a genre that seems to have been much overlooked - until now. Vegan Soul Kitchen is a worthy addition to any cookbook shelf, and is an inspiring recipe collection to help readers introduce new and inventive dishes to their cooking repertoires.
