Vegan After Dark Next Friday

It's that time of the month again. Time for Vegan After Dark, meeting next Friday at Senor Wong in St. Paul. Senor Wong has anything and everything a lounge lizard could want. Try ordering the vegetarian chile relleno (easily made vegan by skipping the cheese) or how about the "Mocko Taco," a deliciously spicy taco made with mock duck served with pico de gallo and lime wedges. There will be a special signature drink lovingly created by their bartender just for our event! Senor Wong keeps the party going with live DJ's spinning the tunes from 10pm to close. Now that's a night on the town! Once there, look for the green "V" table marker or anyone proudly sporting the word "vegan" across their chest.

Please RSVP with our meetup.com webpage. Got questions? Please contact our host and coordinator, Chrissy, at chrissy.rishavy@exploreveg.org

About Vegan After Dark: VAD is a social group just for kicks. Grab yourself a drink, chat with some swell veg heads, and have a little fun. This series of events is open to both the full-fledged vegan and those that may only be vegan "after dark," but you have to be at least 21 years of age. We meet every last Friday of the month at a variety of venues ranging from chic cocktail bars and neighborhood dive bars to parties hosted at CAA volunteers' homes.

Time: Friday, May 29 from 8:30 PM-2:00 AM
Location: Senor Wong Restaurant and Bar, 111 Kellogg Blvd. St. Paul

Victory: Maine Bans Extreme Confinement

The Humane Society of the United States reports:

"Maine Governor John Baldacci signed landmark legislation preventing two controversial factory farm confinement methods.

Effective January 1, 2011, the new law will prohibit gestation crates and veal crates-individual cages that virtually immobilize breeding pigs and veal calves for nearly their entire lives...

...In addition to California, four other states have passed similar reforms, including Colorado, Florida, Arizona and Oregon."

For Vegetarian, a Strange New World

By Max Fisher, as published online in The Atlantic

April 29, 2009

"My grandmother hides meat in my food. Beef is buried in my mashed potatoes, bits of chicken lurk in my rice like tiny insurgents--edible enemy combatants, undercover and waiting to strike. I love my grandmother dearly, but I've learned never to accept soups from her--the murkier, the riskier--and to keep a sharp eye should we sit next to each other at restaurants. For an 83-year-old, she's got surprisingly nimble little hands.

I'm a vegetarian, you see, and learning to accept that many people will never accept my lifestyle is just part of living without meat. In fact, it's the hardest part, as I explain in this first installment of a series on reconciling love of food with the choice to live as a vegetarian."
