Welcome New and Returning U Students!
It may be time to put away the swimsuits and suntan lotion and start cracking the books, but that doesn't mean the fun is over!
CAA's student group chapter welcomes back returning students and extends its greetings to the 5,000+ first-year students that will be joining us for 2009-2010!
We are currently planning a multitude of exciting events to start this school year off right!
6th Annual Veg Week - This week-long series of events begins Tuesday, Sept. 29th at 7:00 p.m. with a free talk and catered reception in the Coffman Theatre featuring research scientist and author Jonathan Balcombe. The rest of the week will be filled with fun veg-friendly events including a potluck, movie showings, dine-outs, a cooking class and a tour of a Minneapolis chicken sanctuary. Learn more about Veg Week.
New Volunteer Meetings - Interested in getting active and helping animals? We will be holding a New Volunteer Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15th from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in Coffman 302. Come hear more about CAA, find ways to get involved, meet other volunteers, and enjoy some free vegan food! Feel free to fill out a volunteer application in advance, or just stop by to learn more about the opportunities available to you.
Weekly On-Campus Meetings - Join us every Monday at 4:00 p.m. in Coffman 301 to discuss current CAA activities, talk to other volunteers, and share your ideas!
Please join us for any or all of these activities! If you need any veg resources or would like any more info about CAA, please don't hesitate to stop by our office in Coffman 226 A.
We are looking forward to a great semester!
Sixth Annual Vegan Food Showcase: September 23rd
Join CAA on Wednesday, September 23rd for our Sixth Annual Vegan Food Showcase on University of Minnesota's West Bank Plaza! We will be distributing lots of free vegan food at the event to demonstrate to the entire University community just how tasty vegan food really is. We are also looking for volunteers to staff this event. You can help beforehand or on the day of the event between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you are interested in helping (it's easy and fun!), please email Lauren at lauren.gillman@exploreveg.org as soon as possible.
Time: Wednesday, September 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Article: The Meat of the Problem
By Ezra Klein, as printed in the Washington Post
July 29, 2009
The debate over climate change has reached a rarefied level of policy abstraction in recent months. Carbon tax or cap-and-trade? Upstream or downstream? Should we auction permits? Head-scratching is, at this point, permitted. But at base, these policies aim to do a simple thing, in a simple way: persuade us to undertake fewer activities that are bad for the atmosphere by making those activities more expensive. Driving an SUV would become pricier. So would heating a giant house with coal and buying electricity from an inefficient power plant. But there's one activity that's not on the list and should be: eating a hamburger.
If it's any consolation, I didn't like writing that sentence any more than you liked reading it. But the evidence is strong. It's not simply that meat is a contributor to global warming; it's that it is a huge contributor. Larger, by a significant margin, than the global transportation sector...
