Now Hiring: Summer Food Giveaway Coordinator

CAA is hiring a full-time, seasonal employee to coordinate our summer food giveaways. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2010.

Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA) is offering a paid seasonal position for a full-time Summer Food Giveaway Coordinator. Candidates must be organized, outgoing, have some general knowledge of vegan food products, and have excellent communication skills. Experience in outreach, event planning and logistics, volunteer coordination, and food preparation are desired. Candidates should be passionate about animal advocacy and veganism.

The role of the Food Giveaway Coordinator is to work with volunteers to distribute several hundred dollars worth of vegan food samples during each of six to ten food giveaway events held throughout the months of June, July and August.

Book Club Meeting: "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer

Join CAA's Compassionate Living Book Club as we read this immensely popular book that is changing the way people think about food. Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir, and the author's own detective work, Eating Animals explores the many stories we use to justify our eating habits. He talks about the role of folklore and pop culture, family traditions and national myth, apparent facts and inherent fictions and the way such tales can lull us into a brutal forgetting.

The Book Club meets twice a month, every other Sunday, to discuss our current selection. Books will be read a few chapters at a time to allow for more meaningful and in depth discussion.

Vegan Chili Cook-off

Warm up at the 1st Annual Vegan Chili Cook-off! Hosted by CAA, Fast and Furless and Do It Green! Minnesota, it's guaranteed to spice up a chilly Minnesota night. Attendees will sample and judge a delicious variety of vegan chili recipes prepared by twelve local amateur cooks at this FREE event.

Vegan beer, cornbread and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Do It Green! Minnesota's Eco Wiggle (a fun new version of Twister) will also be on hand for those who would like to play.

Community Meeting

If you want to get involved in a project or if you have an idea for one, join us for our next meeting. CAA holds monthly community meetings to discuss current and proposed projects and events. Vegan After Dark at Pizza Luce!

You don't have to be a frat boy to eat like one! Join us for "Get Your Pizza and Beer Here" Vegan After Dark at Pizza Luce Downtown. Vegan After Dark is a social gathering just for kicks. On the last Friday or Saturday of each month, veg-friendly folks meet at various locations in the twin cities for cocktails, small bites, and adventures in socializing. You don't have to be vegan to hang... you only have to be up for a good time.

What's your favorite pizza topping combo? They have it! Soy cheese, mock meats, and ricotta. Oh my! The cocktails will flow all night long at the newly remodeled bar. Don't be a square. We'll see you there!

5th Annual Animal Law Conference

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 9, 2010) - Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) members, William Mitchell College of Law (WMCL) alumni, students and faculty, law and veterinary students and others interested in animal law have the opportunity to attend the 5th Annual Animal Law Conference. The conference takes place on Saturday, March 27 at William Mitchell College of Law, located at 875 Summit Ave. in St. Paul.

The conference will feature several prominent speakers, including: Bruce Wagman, Partner, Schiff Hardin; Jonathan Lovvorn, VP & Chief Counsel for Animal Protection Litigation & Research, HSUS; Scott Heiser, Sr., Attorney & Criminal Justice Program Director, Animal Legal Defense Fund; Russ Mead, General Counsel, Farm Sanctuary; Kathy Hessler, Professor & Clinical Director, Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School; and Pamela Frasch, Assistant Dean of the Animal Law Program & Executive Director, Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School among others.

The topics covered will include: creative approaches in animal law, legal issues involved in rescuing abused animals, prosecution of puppy mill and hoarding cases, animal law judicial and legislative update, jury issues in animal law and litigating abuses of animals used in "entertainment."

Recipe: Chik'n Cacciatore

This is a lovely dish when you want something more sophisticated than plain old spaghetti. The flavors of the vegetables mix nicely with the sauce. This is a great way to take advantage of all the great produce at the farmer's market. When all is said and done you'll have a beautiful meal that looks and tastes like it took much more work than it really did! Pair this with bruschetta for a full meal.

Sweet Recipe: Vegan Tiramisu

This vegan tiramisu is easy to make yet quite delicious. The "mascarpone" is made from vegan cream cheese mixed with agar and ends up having the perfect texture and taste. Vanilla wafers are used instead of ladyfingers, which are difficult to find in vegan form; this ends up working quite well (although feel free to substitute vegan lady fingers for the wafers if you have them).

U of M Community Involvement Fair

CAA will have an informational table at the 2010 University of Minnesota Community Involvement Fair. You can make a difference in the Twin Cities community. The Community Involvement Fair gives students a chance to learn about local volunteer and internship opportunities. Over 90 organizations will be attending the fair this year, and CAA is one of them.

The event takes place on Feb. 3rd from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and we need your help to staff it. Like talking to people about animal rights and vegetarianism? This is a great opportunity for direct person-to-person outreach!

Volunteer of the Month: Sen Holiday

Our volunteer of the month for the month of January is Sen Holiday. Sen started volunteering with CAA this fall when she saw a poster about VegWeek and wanted to help out. She helped work events at VegWeek, has done some leafleting, and has designed various things for CAA. Some of her favorite things about volunteering with CAA are, " meeting and working with other vegans and vegetarians, as well as being able to see that my efforts aren't for naught."

BRUSSELS - Delegates arriving at the gates of the climate conference in Copenhagen last month were met by women in furry animal suits holding placards showing pictures of lambs, cows and pigs and warning, "Don't Eat Me."

The women were representatives of Ching Hai, the leader of a group that advocates adherence to Buddhist precepts, including following vegan or vegetarian diets.

As they lined up for hours in freezing conditions, many of the delegates seemed grateful for the neatly wrapped snacks - meat-free sandwiches - that the women were handing out free.

Followers of Ching Hai say that one of her principal goals is to fight environmental disasters, and her representatives in Copenhagen appeared eager to spread the message that methane, which is belched in large quantities by cows and other livestock raised for the meat and dairy industries, is among the most potent planet-warming gases.

But the virtues of vegetarianism as part of the battle to curb climate change are far from being an issue just for the spiritually inclined.

Jonathan Safran Foer on the Morality of Vegetarianism

Jonathan Safran Foer's new book, "Eating Animals," is an eloquent exploration of something most sentient humans think about at some point in their lives: Just what exactly am I eating? Or more to the point, "Just who exactly am I eating?" Foer has written an excellent, serious and earnest book, and I spoke to him about his conclusions recently. JG: Isn't it terribly boring to be a vegetarian? Go to this question of whether we are naturally omnivores, or is that just a cop-out?

JF: Well that's like asking, are women naturally subservient to men? If we look at history, one might have reason to think so. I mean, we certainly treated women as second-class citizens, almost always until quite recently. That doesn't mean it's right, that doesn't mean life is boring if we suddenly treat them as equals. Is a diet less rich without meat? Yes, it is. Is a diet less rich with chimpanzee? Yes, it is. I don't find it boring. Maybe I've just been a vegetarian for long enough.

This has been quite a busy year for us in continuing our work to end the suffering of farm animals. We leafleted at various concerts throughout the year and especially during Outreach for Animals week. We also hosted our second annual Their Lives, Our Voices (TLOV) conference, which was a big success.

In September, we held a Vegan Food Showcase. We distributed samples of tasty vegan food to over 1,000 people. On top of that, 500 took our Pledge to Be Veg, agreeing to be vegetarian or vegan for a week. Just think of how many animals were saved that week by their decisions! Events like these depend on the support of compassionate people like you. Please donate today.

Upright Egg Theater's Vegan Holiday Party

Upright Egg Theatre Company presents:
The 3rd Annual Present Project: A CabarEgg

Musical toy rebellions, rapping mall Santas, a great vegan meal, and more add to this exciting holiday party! Every Winter Upright Egg invites the Twin Cities community into its home for a holiday charity party including a seasonal vegan dinner, exciting prizes (tickets to local theaters including The Guthrie, The History Theatre, and more!) and activities, and live performance throughout. Admission is by donation only. This includes food, dude! This year all profits will be donated to District 202.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12, and the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 18, 19 and 20. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. and take place at the Tilsner Artists Cooperative in Lowertown St. Paul.

CAA Annual Banquet Silent Auction Request

CAA is already preparing for our annual fundraising banquet , which will take place the evening of April 8, 2010. A major part of this event is a silent auction and we are gathering items to auction off to benefit CAA. If you have a potential auction item or know of an individual or business who might be willing to donate an auction item, please contact Katie Tharp at 612-251-4913 or katie.tharp@exploreveg.org.

Sample auction items:

Artwork, pottery, jewelry
Vegan bath or beauty products
Items for the home such as nice linens, note cards, a vase, or cooking/serving utensils
Themed baskets (examples: "movie basket" with DVDs, popcorn, and snacks, "gardener's basket" with gardener's gloves, seeds, small tools, and hand lotion)
Certificates for services such as haircuts, massages, car services, residential painting, gutter cleaning, etc.
Special experiences donated by an individual, such as a boat ride, the loan of a kayak, a "mystery date" for two, dinner prepared for four, a nightof babysitting, a cooking class, etc.
Items that people may purchase as gifts for pets or children, such as toys or snacks

Leaflet at the Mason Jennings Concert

Come pass out leaflets on animal cruelty, factory farming, and vegetarianism at the Mason Jennings concert! Leafleting is a fun, easy, and effective way to help the animals when you don't have a lot of time to volunteer!

Concert leafleting involves handing out brochures to attendees as a concert lets out. If you only have a little time to volunteer, this is a great way to help animals. Leafleting is a fun, effective, and easy form of outreach! Pat Brown says animal farming is an ecological disaster. Patrick O. Brown, a Stanford University biochemist, has changed science twice by giving stuff away. In the early 1990s Brown invented the DNA microarray, a tool that measures how cells make use of their DNA; he then showed researchers how to make their own, transforming genetic research. In 2000 he was one of three scientists who launched a free, online scientific journal called the Public Library of Science (PLOS); it has already broken the stranglehold of $200-a-year scientific publications like Science and Nature.

Now he is tackling an even bigger foe. Over the next 18 months Brown, 55, will take a break from his normal scientific work (finding out how a small number of genes are translated into a much larger number of proteins) in order to change the way the world farms and eats. He wants to put an end to animal farming, or at least put a significant dent in our global hunger for cows, pigs and chickens.

Informational Table at University of MN

In order to educate the community about animal issues and give community members a chance to learn more about what they can do to help, CAA volunteers regularly staff informational tables at Twin Cities colleges and universities, festivals, and other venues.

CAA's tabling program is an excellent outreach opportunity! By offering free literature, recipe booklets, advice, and fun stickers to the public, we make it easy for anyone interested to have access to a variety of helpful vegetarian and animal advocacy resources. Join our team of volunteer "tablers" and help make the Twin Cities a more animal and veg-friendly place! If you are interested in helping out with our tabling program, please e-mail Ben Kutschied (ben@ExploreVeg.org) with your schedule and preference for community and/or campus tabling opportunities. Even being able to staff our table one hour every couple of weeks can be very helpful!

On-Campus Planning Meeting

Want to get involved in our student group chapter? Have an idea you would like to share? Then join us on December 15th! Come to our on-campus planning meeting to hear about opportunities to get involved, or to share some ideas of your own. We hold planning meetings periodically to discuss current and proposed projects and events. If you want to get involved in a project or if you have an idea for one, join us at a meeting!

Some ideas that have already been suggested include another University Dining Services Veg Night, a Spring Speaker Event, and ways to make the CMU office more welcoming to students. Food and beverage will be provided by CAA, so show up hungry and ready to talk strategy!

Article: Eating Animals is Making Us Sick

Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the critically acclaimed novels "Everything is Illuminated" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." His latest book, the nonfiction "Eating Animals," (Little, Brown and Co.) was published on November 2.

He says, "If the way we raise animals for food isn't the most important problem in the world right now, it's arguably the No. 1 cause of global warming: The United Nations reports the livestock business generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

It's the No. 1 cause of animal suffering, a decisive factor in the creation of zoonotic diseases like bird and swine flu, and the list goes on. It is the problem with the most deafening silence surrounding it. "

His book, "Eating Animals," addresses factory farming from numerous perspectives: animal welfare, the environment, the price paid by rural communities, the economic costs. He shares some of what he's learned about how the way we raise animals for food affects human health.
