Event Descriptions

Veg Week 2007 Kick-Off Event:Baur with Pig

"Farm Sanctuary: Changing Our Hearts and Minds About Animals" with Gene Baur

By recounting the stories of rescued animals who now live in peace at Farm Sanctuary, Gene Baur (formerly Bauston) will make the case that farm animals—like all animals—have feelings and can respond to kindness.

Propelled by eloquent testimony, Baur will use firsthand accounts to illustrate how human and animal lives are caught in today's out-of-control factory farms. Just as cruelty to animals can lead to a broader callousness and disregard for life, empathy and compassion can awaken understanding, create hope, and give rise to greater awareness of the decisions that affect our world.

Baur is the co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, America's leading farm animal protection organization. He holds a masters degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University and played an important role in passing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming methods – including bans on pig gestation crates, veal crates, and foie gras. His efforts have been covered by leading news organizations, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, NPR, and CNN.

This is a free event, open to the public. It will be followed by a free, catered reception and a chance to interact one-on-one with Baur. All are invited to join us for this eye-opening, inspiring event.

Film Screening: Peaceable Kingdom

As part of Veg Week, we will be showing the life-changing documentary Peaceable Kingdom, followed by free snacks and a question and answer session. [Note: We will be showing this film twice during Veg Week]

Peaceable Kingdom, starring our Veg Week Kick-Off speaker Gene Baur, takes a mind-opening journey to the front lines of an unseen national drama. Stories of farmers questioning the fundamental assumptions behind their way of life reveals a riveting portrait of human and animal lives caught in an out-of-control industrial machine. Much more than an exposé, the film is an inspiring story of personal redemption, compassion, healing and hope.

spring potluck

"Peaceable Kingdom is a masterpiece," says Dr. Jane Goodall. "I hope it inspires growing numbers of people to support this desperately important cause."

Veg Potluck

What better way to celebrate Veg Week and try some great veg food than with a vegetarian potluck? While some food will be provided, everyone is encouraged to bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share that serves around eight people. Also, it is encouraged, but not necessary, to bring your own plate and silverware. This is a great opportunity to sample dozens of delicious foods, meet cool people from the community, and have fun. We'll even be raffling off prizes to those who take the Veg Pledge!

Veg Cooking Class

Want to learn how to make delicious and simple vegan food? Come watch skilled chef, Tim Holtgrewe, demonstrate how to make mouth watering vegetarian specialties. All the food will be vegan, easy to make, free, and, most importantly, absolutely delicious!

We will also have Suzanne Sorenson, R.D., on hand to share tips and talk about the basics of healthy vegetarian and vegan eating.

If you like food, this is an event not to be missed!

We'll even be able to order special, off-the-menu options and those with a Veg Pledge Discount Card will receive 10% off their order.
