Ninety percent of farmed pigs are raised in confinement facilities like the one pictured here.

In general, pigs are clean, intelligent, social animals. However, factory farms frustrate their natural desires to exercise, explore, play, root, stay clean, and socialize normally.

Despite the facts that pigs reach slaughter weight in less than six months and their diet is laced with drugs to control disease, 13.7% of them die before slaughter because of the poor confitions and harsh treatment.

This factory farm has their "dead pile" of pigs laying by the side of the road. Dead pigs are found at most factory farms.

Pigs are overcrowded in factory farms. By walking, sitting, or lying down, they push their own wastes through slats in the floor to storage pits below. The pigs are forced to inhale fumes from these pits, increasing their chances for disease.

This shed confines hundreds of pigs. Pig death in these facilities is common. Three dead and frozen pigs lay not even 100 feet from this shed, which is one of four at this factory farm.

This pig was found dead with frozen blood discharging from his nose and mouth, and several abrasions and cuts on his face, neck, and front legs.
Date: 1/15/2000

The large amounts of blood suggest that this animal was still alive when abandoned outside in the Minnesota winter. The way the blood is splattered also suggests he was unable to move, yet struggled, flinging his head around before finally dying.

Yet another pile of dead pigs at a factory farm. This farm has a storage shed to hold the carcasses which will be picked up by the rendering plant.

Confined and overcrowded on factory farms. Pigs often become frustrated, bored, aggressive, stressed and more susceptible to disease.

A frozen trail of blood from the nose of this now dead pig suggests she was abandoned alive and left to die outside of this breeding facility.

Multiple dead piglets lay inside a plastic bag while four additional dead pigs lay strewn around the entrance way to this factory farm.
