Mock Tuna Salad

Sink your teeth into an amazing vegan tuna sandwich. This tuna-friendly version is better than the real thing!

  • 2(15oz.) cans chick-peas, drained (or 3c. cooked)
  • ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 2/3 cup minced celery
  • 1/3 cup minced dill pickle
  • ¼ cup nutritional yeast flakes
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon kelp powder (optional)
  • ½ salt, or 1 tablespoon miso
  • pepper, to taste

In a medium bowl, mash the chick-peas coarsely with a fork. Mix in the remaining ingredients, using ½ cup mayonnaise at first, and then adding more as needed. cover and refrigerate. Use on sandwiches or on a bed of salad greens.

Delicious!

This recipe is one of my favorites. It's easy to make, it tastes great, and it's easy to make a large quantity. I usually use dry chick peas because they are cheaper. Oh, another thing I like about this recipe is that I don't have to measure all the ingredients. I put some amount of each thing, and then I adjust it for taste (which usually involves adding a lot more pickles because I just love pickles!). Don't be scares by the kelp powder. It's like sea weed (but in powder form) and it adds a nice "sea" smell, which makes this taste more like tuna. You can buy kelp powder at most health food stores. Look in the spices section (the bulk spice section might have it) or ask a sales person. It's not necessary to add this, but it's nice to add it if you like a more "tuna" taste. I also made this recipe with some TVP in addition to chick peas; I liked it, but my partner didn't think it was as good as with chick peas.

Delicious!

This recipe was awesome. I don't really like tuna, but thought I would give this a try anyway. I didn't add the kelp powder because I was worried that might make it too "fishy", but even without it, this recipe was amazing. It was better the next day!!

Tuna salad is the only meat I've missed since I went veg (i had dreams about it when I was pregnant. lol), and today I found out you can make mock tuna! Other recipes call for tofu, but I've always thought that hummus had a texture just like tuna, so I'm excited to try the chickpea method. Going to buy some kelp powder tomorrow, can't wait!!! Thank you :)

I am eating it as I write this

This is an absolute GODSEND for vegetarians like me who miss tuna more than any other fish or meat.
I varied the recipe a lot based on what I had in my kitchen, but I can only imagine it would taste even better if I had the extra ingredients. This is definitely something I am going to continue to make and enjoy for the rest of my life.

great recipe! I usually substitute minced onion in place of the pickle as that is how i usually had tuna salad. Tastes great! (

Yum!! Thanks so much for this recipe! One of the things I've missed most since becoming vegan is my tuna melt on a bagel. I've tried other chickpea salads, but they didn't come close to this one--this is it! Thanks to this recipe and Daiya cheddar-flavor shreds, I have my mock-tuna melts on a bagel again! Yay!

Y-U-M!!

This is one of my favorite recipes for lunch at work. It fills me up, tastes great and doesn't get me the "that looks weird" looks I often get. ;-) No, seriously though, I have shared it with friends and I LOVE it!

This tastes better with REAL TUNA in it!! YUM!! I think that I'll use less mayo so the true flavor of the TUNA can be savored!! And less veggies, I do not want to thump a tomato on the head.
