Juneteenth Cooking Class: Stewed Black Eyed Peas and Greens

Juneteenth is a celebration steeped in the history of enslaved African Americans gaining their freedom. As with any celebration, traditions have been formed around certain foods. In this cooking class, we will honor Juneteenth with a dish of Stewed Black Eye Peas & Greens.

The combination of the okra, greens, tomatoes and spices is unlike any other type of stew out there. You can have this served on a bed of rice or quinoa as the recipe suggests, or it can stand alone with some cornbread.

This a healthy dish, and you can use all fresh ingredients that will surely have your family or guest requesting for seconds.

The suggested donation for this class is $5. The class will take place via Zoom.

We build community with those who are Plant-curious or Vegan. Youth, and people of all ages, can watch these amazing dishes made or cook alongside Tamuno. To cook along during the class, you’ll need these ingredients:

  • 2 cups of black eyed peas
  • 2 stalks of collards 
  • 3 Tbsp of grapeseed oil (or other neutral oil)
  • 3 1/2 C (785g) Water
  • 2 celery stalks roughly chopped
  • 1 whole yellow onion roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp of chopped garlic
  • 15-oz can of diced fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 tsp of smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric 
  • 1/4 tsp of cayenne 
  • 1/8 tsp of chili powder
  • 2 cups of vegetable stock low sodium
  • Okra, fresh or frozen (if frozen, a 1 lb 10 oz bag)
  • 6 cups of steamed rice brown or quinoa
