Celebrate National Pig Day: Act for MN Pigs

All Day

National Pig Day is March 1 and you can help millions of mother pigs in Minnesota have space to turn around. It takes just five minutes! You have until March 12 to take action.

A current bill in Minnesota would take grant funds currently used for expanding factory farms, and allow these funds to be used to transition farms from gestation crates to less-cramped group housing for mother pigs.

Recent public opinion surveys, state laws, and corporate commitments make it clear that people in Minnesota and the U.S. are against the use of gestation crates – and we can help change take place here in Minnesota!

Steps to take action

  1. Give your state House and Senate representatives a call to express your views (suggested talking points below, along with a link for contact information)
  2. If you’d prefer contacting them via email you can do that instead.
  3. After your contact, we’d appreciate you filling out this form to share about how it went.

If you live in Brooklyn Center or St. Cloud, read the whole page before reaching out; we have special information for you below.

Want to get more information before you call? Check out this piece from We Animals Media and this article that is specific to Minnesota by Compassionate Action for Animals board member Julie Knopp .

Want to share more about your concern for animals, or your opposition to factory farming? Do so! Just be sure to keep your message respectful, ask your representatives to support House File 2254 or Senate File 2186, and leave your name and address.

How to Find your Representatives

Enter your ZIP code to find your Minnesota House and Senate representatives and their phone number here, then call their offices using the talking points below.

What to Say When Calling a House Member

  • My name is [your name], and I live in [city/town]. I am calling to ask Representative [their name] to support House File 2254. This bill would allow existing agricultural grant funds to transition pig farms away from gestation crates which trap mother pigs in crates so small they cannot turn around.
  • Public opinion surveys show that Minnesotans and Americans want to end the use of gestation crates.
  • McDonald’s, Chipotle, and other companies have changed their buying practices to avoid gestation crates.
  • Fifteen other states have banned gestation crates.
  • California’s Prop 12 requires that pigs sold as food in California not be raised using gestation crates.
  • Pigs deserve respect, and the space to stand up, lay down, turn around, and walk. The market is changing, and Minnesota policy needs to change with it.
  • I would appreciate a response by email at [your email] or by phone at [your phone]. Thank you for your time.

Remember, please share the results of your calls!

You can also share if you’d like to be involved in the future on the form.

Live in Brooklyn Center or Saint Cloud?

If you live in MN house district 38B of Samantha Vang, in Brooklyn Center, or MN senate district 14 of Aric Putnam,  in St. Cloud, please also ask for the bill to be scheduled for a hearing in the agricultural committee.

Vang and Putnam are chairs of the House and Senate agriculture committees respectively, and the bills must be heard there in order to be passed this session.

Thank you for taking action for mother pigs!

This action is supported by Minnesotans Against Cruelty to Farm Animals, a coalition that Compassionate Action for Animals is part of.
